Old Monk Rum is a dark is matured in former sherry oak barrels for seven years. Although the beverage has 42.8% alcohol by volume spirit, it has a soft taste with a creamy consistency.
The story :
The 157-year-old story of Old Monk started in Kasauli, a sleepy town in the state of Himachal Pradesh, India where a man named Edward Dyer set up a brewery in 1855.
Flavour notes:
Old Monk has a charmingly soft christmasy flavor combination of decadent chocolate, roasted coffee beans, sweet vanilla, creamy caramel, nutty almonds and exotic cinnamon.
Why it stands out:
- In addition to being one of the oldest, it is also one of the best selling rum in the world , despite not spending a penny on advertising. (It was the best selling rum until very recently.)
- Currently being exported to 18 countries across various continents, where it enjoys a cult following, it is practically synonymous with the word Rum in it’s home country of India, even dubbed by some as the national drink.
- There are no artificial components added in the manufacturing process. It is completely and organic and ecological. The original rum mixtures upto 5 decades old are used, which ensures the authenticity of every bottle.
- Each bottle is crafted by hand. No two bottles are exactly identical. The seafarer’s drink does not fall over in the boat and stay in upright in stormy weather in any thanks to the low stable and wide bottle design.

Harrykane (Hurricane)
Ingredients:
90 ml Old Monk
60 ml passion fruit juice
30 ml orange juice
30 ml lime juice
15 ml grenadine (Or cranberry juice)
15 ml sugar syrup
This cocktail from New Orleans is super easy to make once you have the raw materials. Just fill half a shaker with ice and add all the ingredients. Shake well and strain into a glass over ice.
Old Monk Espresso Martini
Ingredients:
5 cl Old Monk Rum
3 cl Espresso
1 cl Coffee liquor Kahlua
2 cl Raspberry syrup
Pour all ingredients into shaker and shake hard, then sieve it into previously chilled cocktail glass. Decorate with a few coffee beans.
